Teaching Experience: |
|
My students who have become professional harpists
include Mitch Landy, past president of the Folk Harp
Society. I have taught beginners from ages eight to
sixty and beyond. I teach sound harp technique. "Moira's
students have perfect hands" --from an international
harp conference. If your hands have ever hurt from
playing the harp, I can help you. I also teach singing
in all styles from pop to folk, even to opera. |

Performance Experience: |
|
Hundreds of weddings and parties; principle performer
in half-a-dozen operas, harpist for The Foundation
Orchestra and the Carson City Symphony; guest artist for
Riverdance-style shows, opened for Golden Bough and
Heather Alexander, concerts at the Sierra Arts Festival,
Wingfield Park Amphitheater, and many other venues. I am
currently focusing on Celtic music, specifically Mary
O'Hara style "ceol mor" singing with the harp. My
current performance schedule can be found online at www.moirastern.com |

Education: |
|
I hold a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of
Redlands, and I did two years graduate work in voice and
composition at the University of Nevada, Reno. I have studied
seven foreign languages, and I am an editor pro tem for Mensa. I
studied acting, dance and directing, and I have directed
Shakespeare plays for the Renaissance Faire, as well as Irish
dance shows with the harp. I can coach diction in any language a
singer is likely to need, and I can prepare a young performer for
a career. |

Description & Biography: |
|
Moira Stern sings and accompanies herself on the pedal harp. She
sings in French, Italian, German, Latin, Spanish, Scottish and
Irish Gaelic, and numerous native dialects. An award-winning
Gaelic singer with a nearly five octave range, she specializes in
the folk songs of Britain and Ireland. When she was four, her
mother noticed that Moira had perfect pitch, and could sing back
any tune on the first hearing, whether an aria or a Gaelic
folksong. She began memorizing folksongs at the age of six, and
had amassed an enormous repertoire by her teens. From records and
books, she taught herself to sing in Gaelic, and developed a
passion for the harp. She played the harp in restaurants
professionally for ten years. Moira started memorizing operas in
all languages at the age of ten, with Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.”
She began formal vocal training at the unusually early age of
fourteen. She joined the Renaissance Faire at the age of nine. She
sang and played the harp, led hundreds of parades, and directed
Shakespeare plays and Irish dance shows. Many singers have studied
another instrument, but very few singers accompany themselves on
the concert harp; fewer still would even attempt to sing opera
while doing so. As a result, Moira’s talents have been in constant
demand ever since she became a professional performer. |
